Notes: produced in full secret as a surprise track to be premiered only at the RECOIL "A Strange Hour In Budapest" screening event in Guimarães on 23rd November 2012.
Both Alan Wilder and the audience wouldn't know what was coming their way as the closing track from Alex Fernandes' aka AlexFX warmup live set.
This special version of one RECOIL's most pivotal tracks builds around virtually recorded telephone calls from some of Alan's closest entourage including (in order of appearance) Mauricio Moriarty, Maira Oliva, Christine Thomsi Thomsen, myself (Thomas Köckeis), my former partner Tanja Glück, Kellie Andrews, Alex Fernandes and Rhianna Faye. We all chose one part of the text, but the general idea was, each would have to say "and I want" in their native language.
Having so much people close to Alan keeping their mouths shut up until this piece played for the very first time was no easy task - but we achieved it! Rhianna Faye had the extra responsibility of being the new Nicole Blackman - and she did really a perfect job!
All included audio files are available in 320 kB MP3 format.
Although this is not an official release it was approved by Alan Wilder himself.
Alex: my original idea was to make a surprise remix. For that, I had to get the original vocal stems - not an easy task, considering the secrecy intended - so, the "rebuilt" concept started from there. I can't really remember who I talked first (Maira? Rhianna?), but soon enough this small group was created and contributed to the central idea, as I was feeding regular updates of the track. One last thing: during my first lunch with Alan in Porto, he had to take a call from some reporter. I took that time to tell Britt about our secret and asked her just to make sure Alan would be in the venue 10 minutes before I finish my live set to hear the surprise - She kept our secret but the Boss ended up surprising me more: he wanted to watch my full live set.
Christine: I felt very much honoured for being asked to be a member of this new remix, although I was a bit afraid.....never done this kind of thing. When I chose the line I wanted to say.... I tried to find a line without too many "r"s... because of the German accent... saying the words "I want" in my native language wasn't the problem though...
Anyway....the idea was brilliant....and Alex is a real genius!! I'm also proud we kept it as a secret for such a long time and I am still happy I was involved in this. And "some great reward" was coming our way....Alan liked it!
Kellie: I came in rather later on the project and like everyone else was very honoured to be asked to help take part in the remix of WANT-The Rebuilt version. For me, WANT - the original Alan Wilder track, has always been a very much loved and favored track from his LIQUID album, and certainly with its complexity and stunning lyrical prowess from Nicole Blackman, I felt that it could never be made better than the original and to a point should this beauty be touched at all. I was quite surprised when ARCHITECT, produced the first remix WANT (Renegade of Noise).
This blew everyone away including myself. Feeling more confident and having known Alex for sometime, I was happy to contribute what ever was needed. Then to be further informed that the track would be a 'surprise' for Alan at the Portugal gig from his most well known friends/fans I could not say no. Alex made everything very simple for the recording process and explained in depth how each part should be played as spoken word. I managed to beg and borrow headphones and mic from friends as I did not have any and chose to do my recordings via Sound Cloud. Alex then 'collected' those from my account and so began the process of creating. As I recall, Alex spent many, many hours producing and asking for the collective WANT teams' views, and eventually there was a work in progress finally adding the original orchestration stems provided by Alan, we had lift off and WANT-The Rebuilt Version was born. We were asked to keep quiet, which I admit was hard as I was dealing with Alan on an almost daily basis on the London shows. But we all did keep it to ourselves. On the night of the Portugal show, as I heard it, when the track was played Alan was very very surprised, and humbled that Alex had created this and the rest of us had contributed. It showed him how much love there was out there for his music. Of course the crowd went wild and still to this day I am asked if the WANT Rebuilt version is available for download. I was proud to be a part of this, and working with everyone else was very enjoyable, especially with Maira Oliva and Rhianna Faye, who should get an grammy for her part. Coming up against the wonderful Nicole Blackman and having to provide the voice samples to match is a challenge and one she did so outstandingly well with it was hard to almost distinguish the two.
But the honors should got to Alex for his concept and production. I would love to work with him again as I would also like to work with the others in the team perhaps on something else. Who knows. But at the end of the day I am always overjoyed when asked to say that I was a part of this production. Thank you Alex.
Maira: (to follow)
Mauricio: Alex's process and final product were an amazing experience for all, it meant to be a surprise and a tribute to the man who creates and plays the soundtrack of our life, Alan Wilder. There's a warm and respectful contact between all RECOIL's family members and Alan's closest entourage so when Alex contacted us for this beautiful reversion for "Want" we felt honored and compromised to do our best (even if my contribution was the ugliest of all :P), this idea was growing up and it had a development really interesting since the embryonic track 'till the final one, Alex made a professional work, as usual (and magic) with our voices and it was incredible to hear that instrumental part (Bond-esque).
This Alex's work and our little "contribution" just shows we have RECOIL's music in our hearts and ears, it reminds to us how important is Alan Wilder's genius in our world. And we want...
Rhianna: I am a huge admirer of RECOIL and Alan's contributions to DEPECHE MODE, so taking on the mood for "Want", one of my favorite RECOIL songs, was an enjoyable, even natural, experience. When Alex contacted me for vocals, I quickly responded with one take, hoping part of it would make the cut for the rebuilt version. Little did I know I'd end up being the main vocal! It was fun hearing it evolve with all of our voices as the Porto show grew closer, and even more fun to know how much the crowd, and Alan, loved Alex's final rebuilt version!
Tanja: when Thomas asked me to contribute to this project I was very surprised! I had no idea at all how Alex' track would sound like but when I heard it I thought that he had really done a great job and I liked it a lot. Thomas played the original track again to me to get it back to my mind again and we had a lot of fun doing the actual recording. When I heard the final track we (our son Daniel, Tom and myself) had all a big smile on our faces - it's always weird hearing your own voice but I think the final result is really great!
Thomas: when I got invited by Alex it was rather flattering as I didn't have that much contact to him before. When he offered his intention to us doing a special surprise track for Alan to be played at the Guimarães screening event, I thought this was a brilliant idea. A track done by fans for other fans and of course Alan. In addition I liked the international approach of the project - different contributors from different countries. As Alex' idea was to feature "I want" in various languages I immediately thought of my former wife Tanja to contribute in Russian language as she's a born Russian. I made this suggestion to Alex and he immediately agreed.
Actually I didn't have any proper microphone to do the recording but I remembered my little voice recorder - and as the concept was to provide "phone calls" it was clear to me that the quality didn't have to be 100% perfect. I think it worked and it was really big fun participating and being involved in this project. Unfortunately I missed Alan's face when he heard the track...
